Lean Driven Innovation

by Norbert Majerus
Sep 18th, 2018
Lean Driven Innovation emerged in the early of the 21st century when American-based product development practitioners studied the principles and innovatively experimented them. Norbert Majerus, recent retiree of Goodyear, walked us through some highlights and key learnings of the transformation of Goodyear into an innovative Lean Product Development organization.

Lean is not something new; it has been used in numerous companies to reduce the costs of research and development (R&D), but this typically has a small impact on the bottom line. The application of Lean can create more value for customers, and help businesses create revenue and growth with a more customer-focused mindset, so Lean can reinvent itself based on the challenges that lay ahead.

“Lean has been used extensively in manufacturing all over the world, including at Goodyear,” said Norbert Majerus, “but the application of Lean principles in R&D and in service industries has been anything but popular or successful.”
Businesses these days have to put out more and more innovative products, but most R&D processes cannot keep up. Hence, companies have trouble delivering those products on time to customers. Majerus spoke of his experience of applying Lean principles at Goodyear, which allowed them to increase on-time delivery and reduce cycle times. The application of Lean Principles resulted in faster product launches with the same amount of resources – doing more with less. By establishing this agile innovative culture, Goodyear stayed ahead of market changes and competition.
